Overseas Travel by Students

Asked on 7 October 2010

Mr Dowling asked the Minister for Education and Training (Mr Wilson) -

QUESTION:

Will the Minister advise if there are inconsistencies in administering the education policy in relation to overseas travel by students and, if so, what does the Minister intend to do about it?

ANSWER:

I thank the Member for his question.

I have been advised by the Department that:

1. The Guidelines for International Travel for Official Purposes - School Study Tours identifies the processes and requirements for schools to consider when planning an international school study tour for students.

2. To better assist the consistent application of the policy, in July this year the department released fact sheets summarising the approval requirements.

3. The Department of Education and Training remains committed to improving educational outcomes for students. The international travel application process is structured to support this fundamental goal, ensuring that student learning is the priority and that students benefit from all approved travel.

4. The Department of Education and Training encourages continuous improvement in the administration of its policies, programs and practices. Accordingly, changes are made from time to time to ensure that improved student outcomes and student welfare remain the central goal.
