Flood affected communities in south-west Queensland will soon be on the receiving end of some much needed generosity from the people of the Gold Coast.
LNP Shadow Minister for Flood Recovery Peter Dowling will spend two days (18-19 January) visiting flood affected communities helping distribute care parcels donated and packed by Gold Coast volunteers.
“Some communities have been without essentials for some weeks and these care parcels, which have been put together in consultation with those communities, will let them know they haven’t been forgotten by the rest of the state,” Mr Dowling said.
“Care parcels will be delivered initially to Oakey, Dalby, Chinchilla and Theodore, communities badly affected by flooding.
“It will also give me an opportunity to meet with councils and communities to hear their views on what they need most to help them recover and rebuild from these devastating floods.
Mr Dowling will be accompanied by Dr Alex Douglas, LNP MP for the Gold Coast seat of Gaven, who has donated a container of medical equipment to help re-establish medical services in Theodore.
Dr Douglas’s wife Susie is the Councillor for Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast City Council and one of the moving forces behind the on-going initiative to prepare and send care parcels to affected communities.
Mr Dowling said the care parcels would meet a short-term need, but communities would need significant long-term support to help them recover and rebuild.
“This is a magnificent gesture by the people of the Gold Coast,” he said.
“Long-term much more will be needed, particularly funds for disaster relief and the LNP strongly encourages everyone to donate whatever money they can to the Premier’s Relief Appeal.”
