When is the 2nd Police Officer being posted on Russell Island?

I have grave concerns as to the timely posting of a second Police Officer to be stationed on Russell Island and the lack of action to place the second Police Officer as committed by the Minister for Police. The SMBI communities and the residents of Russell Island desperately need two Police Officers permanently posted as a matter of priority for the safety of all residents and visitors.

To my knowledge there has been no advertising for the position of the second Police Officer, nor has there been any accommodation or land leased for permanent use to house this Police Officer.

As I understand, the current Police Officer who is posted on Russell Island is retiring in the near future and his position has been advertised, however there is no advertising in place for the second Police Officer's permanent posting.

I raised this issue in Parliament this week and asked a Question on Notice No. 1390 to the Minister for Police Mr Neil Roberts, who now has 30 days to submit a reply to the question:

Question on Notice No. 1390 - Question to the Minister for Police, Mr Neil Roberts

"Can the Minister advise what steps have been taken to ensure two police officers are posted to Russell Island consistent with the Ministers commitment for a second officer to be stationed on Russell Island."

I give my commitment to the SMBI and Russell Island communities that I will not let this issue continue to lie under the radar from the Government and I will keep the community updated and invite anyone with concerns to contact me directly.

I would hope that the Labor Government are not again side-stepping a promise of this magnitude that is so desperately needed for the safety of one of the remotest Island communities in Queensland and I look forward to receiving a response from the Minister for Police to confirm a date for the second Police Officer to be appointed and posted to Russell Island.
